Why Chair Yoga is Heston’s Best Kept Secret for Healthy Ageing (Chair Yoga in Heston)

At Heston Wellness Centre (HWC), we believe that movement is a right, not a privilege. As we get older, the way we exercise might change, but the need for it only grows. For many of our 300+ students, the journey to better health didn’t start on a floor mat, it started on a chair!

If you have been curious about yoga but worried about your balance, your knees, or the thought of "getting down on the floor," our Chair Yoga sessions are designed specifically for you.

What exactly is Chair Yoga?

Quite simply, it is yoga that meets you where you are. Instead of using a traditional mat, we use a stable chair to perform modified versions of classic yoga poses. You get all the benefits of stretching, strengthening, and deep breathing, but with the added security of a solid foundation.

Whether you are seated or using the chair for support while standing, you are in total control.

The Five Key Benefits for Heston Seniors

1. Improved Balance and Falls Prevention Falls are a major concern for many seniors, often caused by a loss of core strength. Chair yoga focuses on "proprioception" (our body's ability to sense its position in space). By strengthening the muscles around your ankles and core, you’ll find yourself feeling steadier on your feet during your daily walk to the Heston shops.

2. Greater Flexibility and Range of Motion Do you struggle to reach for a tin on a high shelf or find it difficult to tie your shoelaces? Gentle seated stretches help lubricate the joints and lengthen the muscles. This "functional fitness" makes everyday tasks easier and less painful.

3. Management of Chronic Conditions Many of our participants join us to help manage the symptoms of arthritis, Parkinson’s, or recovery from an injury. The slow, rhythmic movements of yoga help reduce inflammation and improve circulation, which can lead to better sleep and less reliance on pain medication.

4. Mental Clarity and Stress Relief Yoga isn't just for the body; it’s for the mind. Each session includes mindfulness and "pranayama" (controlled breathing). This helps lower cortisol levels, reducing anxiety and providing a sense of calm that lasts long after the class has finished.

5. Beating Isolation: The "Social" Element Perhaps the biggest benefit of our classes isn't the yoga itself, it’s the friendly social environment. We work closely with local organisations like the Alzheimer’s Society and Shewise to ensure our classes are a hub for the community. Coming to a class of 50+ people might sound daunting, but you’ll find lots of new friends waiting to welcome you.

Is it right for me?

Our Lead Instructor, Sefali Dhani, has over 20 years of teaching experience, and it shows! Every class is tailored to the individuals in the room. If you can breathe, you can do yoga. Whether you are living with dementia, recovering from surgery, or simply haven't exercised in years, you are welcome here.
