The Gentle Power of Seated Tai Chi (Seated Tai Chi in Heston)

At Heston Wellness Centre (HWC), we are often asked: "Is Tai Chi just for people in parks doing slow-motion karate?" The answer is a resounding no! Tai Chi is often described as "meditation in motion." While it looks beautiful, its real power lies in its ability to heal and strengthen the body. At HWC, we have adapted these centuries-old movements into our Seated Tai Chi sessions, making this "moving meditation" accessible to everyone, regardless of mobility or age.

What is Seated Tai Chi?

In our seated sessions, we take the traditional flowing movements of the Yang style and adapt them so they can be performed entirely from the comfort of a sturdy chair. You still get the deep breathing and the graceful arm movements, but without the worry of losing your balance or straining your joints.

Why Tai Chi is "Medication in Motion" for Seniors

1. Better Coordination and Cognitive Health Tai Chi requires "cross-lateral" movements, where your left hand might be doing something different from your right. This is brilliant exercise for the brain. Research has shown that the mental focus required for Tai Chi can help improve memory and may even slow the progression of cognitive decline.

2. Strengthening the "Internal" Muscles While lifting weights builds big muscles, Tai Chi focuses on the tendons and core. By moving slowly and with intention, you build the kind of deep-seated strength that helps you get out of bed more easily or reach for the kettle without a twinge.

3. Arthritis-Friendly Movement Because Tai Chi is "low-impact," it doesn't put stress on your knees or hips. The gentle circular movements help to keep the synovial fluid moving in your joints, which can significantly reduce the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.

4. Blood Pressure and Heart Health The deep, diaphragmatic breathing used in Tai Chi helps to switch off the body's "stress mode." This leads to a natural lowering of the heart rate and can help manage high blood pressure, a common concern for many of our Heston residents.
